“Pistol Pete” Sohren lives for days like this, so even when he experiences a minor setback such as a fuel pump failure just two hours before the 42nd running of the the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, it fails to dampen his enthusiasm.![]()

While other teams were making routine final preparations at the start/finish line in downtown Ensenada, Mexico, Sohren and his crew were around the corner in the parking lot of their hotel, calmly but hurriedly seeking to replace the faulty pump in his Slime/Maxxis Tires Ford Trophy Truck, which failed with less than 100 miles of testing on it. Not the best way to start a day in which Sohren will start the race in the first position, giving him the opportunity to run in dust-free race conditions as the race unfolds. But despite the daunting task of having to fend off the 31 other Trophy Truck entries and a host of Class 1 buggies as well as the rest of the 347 entries from 39 states and 14 countries, Sohren said he intends to start out front and stay there.
"I’ve spent $45,000 in race prep for this one race alone,” Sohren of Glendale, Arizona, said. “We put in a new dash, all-new wiring…and a fuel pump that already broke with less than 100 miles on it.”
Not to worry, the team has plenty of spares and expected to make the start. Confidence is running high. Sohren will drive the first 400 miles of the 672.85-mile race before handing the truck over to Baja rookie Derrick Sproles.
“We intend to lead it the whole way,” Sohren said. “I’ve got a great relief driver in Derrick. He’s never raced Baja before, but I’m confident that he’ll get the job done. Cameron Steele has already made a bet with me that I won’t get out of the truck if I have a 20-minute lead when I come to my final pit, but he’s gonna lose that one. If everything goes well, I’ll do my job and run for about seven hours, then hand the truck over to Derrick and let him bring it home.”
Sohren and co-driver “Lil’ Rich” Klein made the start of the race as scheduled, getting underway at 10:40 a.m. As of 12:45 p.m., they were the unofficial leaders, ahead of the Class 1 buggy of Armin Kremer. All racers having 31 hours to reach the finish line back in Ensenada.

Hey Everyone,
I am working on this great charitable event coming up.! Check out this video!!
Its not even the weekend yet and Ive already spotted a lot of big names in the off-road industry, and even one not in the industry.
This weekend is the SCORE race in Primm. On Thursday afternoon as I was on my way to the infamous Glen Helen for some pre-WORCS training I spotted just about every major Trophy Truck and Class 1 buggy headed the opposite way to get their pit setup. As I was on my way back from Cali today I spotted a few more teams out doing some last minute testing. Couldn't really tell who they were while they were doing 80+ down trails next to the higway. One in Barstow... which was kind of far away so I think they might not be racing, but a few just a little ways towards Vegas away from Primm.
I missed most of the really important people that were at Glen Helen. Kory Ellis was there eariler that day, along with Karey Hart. Just before I got there KHart was out testing some of his short-course trucks. And I bet you wouldn't ever guess who was with him. Pink... yes, the singer. Came out in her Escalade to hang with Hart. JCR (Johnny Campbell Racing) was leaving right when I got there, and a few KTM box vans were present. No quads while I was there, but a few WORCS Bike pros getting ready for their race also.
Today at Racetown 395 there was a few more WORCS bike Pros out riding, but also a WORCS ATV pro( other than myself) but on a bike. Dustin Nelson was doing some testing for Yamaha on the 2010 YZ450F. Yes, the new bike with 4 valves, exhaust straight out the back of the head and all that. And he looked fast on it!
Hopefully I will have something else to write about after tomorrow. I was ready to pit for a class 10 car at the SCORE race tomorrow, but I guess they did a little too much pre-race testing.... Blew up their motor day before the race.
The start of the Vegas to Reno race in Beatty, Nevada.
The top trucks and buggies crossed the finish line a little over an hour ago. Crossing first was Andy McMillin, who came off the line first. BJ Baldwin, who at one point was ahead of McMillin on corrected time during the race after starting off the line in sixth, crossed the second and was close to challenging McMillin for the Day 1 fastest time. Next in was TJ Flores as the first buggy to cross the line, while Harley Letner crossed in fourth (and might be in contention for the overall since he came off the line 11th). Jason Voss was the third truck across to round out the top five. We should know more later, but here's a basic recap for now.
Also, I was able to talk to a few BITD officials today to get the scoop on the one-hour pits. Here's the deal: Once the racers leave the finish line area, they have 10 minutes to get to their pits. Once there, they are on the clock. They have one hour to repair and fix their vehicles. They can go over an hour if they need to, but they will penalized every second and minute they go over (essentially that will be added to their time). So, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out tonight and into tomorrow.
