"Hey TireGuy - How is Kevlar used in an off-road tire? Is it used in the sidewall or all through the tire? Is it the same product used in bullet proof vests?"
Answer: The DuPont Kevlar used in the new Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar is the same material used in bullet-proof vests, and is pound-for-pound 5 times stronger than steel. However, it is not recommended to discharge firearms at the tires. The amount of Kevlar used in bullet-proof vests has been optimized for that type of protection, whereas the amount of Kevlar in the Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar has been optimized for protection against sidewall punctures caused by "normal' off-road hazards.
The Kevlar reinforcement in this tire is used in the sidewalls where puncture resistance is needed most, and not in the tread area of the tire. The tread area has ample protection from punctures supplied by two steel belts and a layer of nylon.
When our reporter Stephen Clark said "Hey, I'm going home to Scotland for a few weeks. Think I'll stop by the Range Rover factory in Great Britain - would you like a look behind the scenes?", I don't remember if our response was "Hell yes!" or "Yeah sure..." Now that we see the results, I'm so glad Stephen fit some work in on his vacation.
"On our first day with Land Rover, I traveled up from London to the outskirts of Birmingham to Land Rover's Solihull plant. Although the British traffic was a little manic, I was fortunate to be behind the wheel of a beautiful Range Rover press vehicle. Arriving at Solihull, I met up with Crathorne and our day started in the Land Rover Experience center where we watched a short movie documenting the history of Land Rover. Then we headed into the vast labyrinth of buildings where Land Rovers are manufactured."
Our first stop was the press shop where raw sheet steel is transformed into contoured panels through an enormous Müller Weingarten multi-step press. The multi stage press uses up to six different dies, with each one performing a different function. The process is highly automated, with robots moving the panels from one die to the next until the panels are lifted off at the end and placed onto a conveyor belt. The steel press shop builds different panels for much of the Land Rover range and some panels for sister company Jaguar. Panels are built in batches as each set of dies are completely different."

No,I'm not going to the US Open of Tennis. I'm an off-road racer and this is Off-Road.com. I'm talking about the US Open of Supercross on October 11th and 12th. Just ordered my tickets today. I found some really cheap prices a few days ago ( Only $29!) The window sat open on my computer for a few days while on waited on my friends to decide if they wanted to go. I watched the numbers of tickets dwindle from allowing me to buy 10 tickets to only 3. By then, I gave up on my friends that hadn't answered. I snagged three tickets for me, my roomate, and his brother.
They are $29 tickets, so they are way up in the nose bleeds, but hey, I'm a broke college student so its well worth it. Thats what they make binoculars for right?
Anyone else going? Let me know. Maybe we can meet up and put a face to the screenname.
Oh yeah, and shop around for prices if you buy tickets. I found somewhere selling tickets literally the next seat over from mine and they were $85.
Hey hey hey! Well it's Sunday evening and I'm watching the Olympics on the television. It's hard to think only 9 months ago I was in Beijing seeing Tianamen Square, Forbidden City, Great Wall and now it's the home of the Olympics. Incredible!
Well we finally got up the first four fabulous Off-Road.com models up for everyone to see. Janica, Summer, Chy, and Lacie are here for you all to interact with. The shoot was a hit, we had a great time and now our hard work is on display here on the site for everyone to check out. Not only that, but they will also be at the upcoming Off-Road Expo in Pomona in two months. Those two months will fly by and before you know it, you will be seeing some hot models at booths, signing posters, meeting the fans and community, taking photos and whatever else they may have in store. I will also be there to meet the community and get a chance to talk to some of the Off-Road affiliates, network and also to have a great time.
This month I'm heading to Europe for some little R and R and will be back September 1st. That doesn't mean I won't be writing my blogs and uploading photos because I will. For now I'm going to upload some old photos I found from back in the day so you can be more familiar with me and who I am, what I do and what I'm all about. Stay tuned!
All the best,
Desiree
Have you been trying and trying to get a swanky European vacation, but your significant other keeps backing out?
I know you never thought you’d get relationship advice on Off-Road.com, but listen up, because I think this will really work.
Show him this , and remind him of the incredible girl you are… how willing you are to make a sacrifice to keep him company as he travels half-way across the world to check out the 2009 KTM Motocross ATV line-up – in SPAIN.
I’m tellin’ you, I really think I’ve made a serious discovery here. I’ll try it tonight and let you know how it goes…
